The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, Dunedin Community Policing Unit, and Explorer Post 900 participated in a Spoil Island Clean-up on Saturday, November 3. Eleven Explorers and five Deputies collected trash on three islands in the Inter-coastal Waterway where many week-end campers leave their garbage and miscellaneous debris behind.
Environmental issues have always been a concern for Marine Unit Deputies Robert Newport and Bret Mowatt. After recognizing the accumulation of trash on these islands, Deputy Newport contacted Explorer Post 900 and Deputy Jan Wagner of the Dunedin Community Policing Unit to assist. One of Exploring's purposes is to provide experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. The community service component of Exploring has given members of Post 900 that opportunity.
We hope that this collaborative effort will be the first of many in attempts to heighten environmental awareness and promote safety even along Pinellas County’s waterways.
